Unlocking PR’s Full Potential: Key Insights from My Talk at the Bay Area Content Marketing Meetup

Scratching surface

During my recent talk at the Bay Area Content Marketing Meetup, I explored how companies can unlock the hidden potential of PR and integrate it with their content marketing strategies.

PR isn’t just publicity! It’s about so much more than just press releases and media relations. It’s a multifaceted tool and, when used strategically, PR can:

  • Influence public opinion on a deeper level
  • Position a company as a market leader
  • Build trust with audiences
  • Communicate messages to create brand awareness
  • Connect with communities: customers, shareholders, employees
  • Change perceptions of a company or issue
  • Shape a narrative around a company or issue
  • Be the caretaker of all brand communications for a company

We all know that the media landscape has changed dramatically in the past few years. Where traditional media was key in the past, today, it’s all about specialized newsletters, micro-influencers, Slack communities, and podcasts as key ways to reach audiences.  Traditional media still holds value but is no longer the sole focus. The key is to identify where your target audience resides and tailor your efforts accordingly.

As Seth Godin says in his “This is Strategy” book, “We can no longer market to the anonymous masses. They’re not anonymous, and they’re not masses.” Instead, PR must focus on engaging with willing participants, building relationships over time, and creating lasting impact.

Content PR Is More Than Publicity, It’s About Always-On Communication
Many companies still view PR through a narrow lens—writing press releases, pitching journalists and hoping for media coverage. While these are important components, PR’s potential goes far beyond. With Content PR, it’s about creating always-on communication that engages audiences where they are—whether that’s traditional media, niche platforms, or emerging digital spaces.

Here are the key takeaways from our discussion:

  1. Adopt a Newsroom Mindset The best PR strategies mimic the processes of a newsroom. PR pros should develop a “nose for news,” constantly identifying story angles and opportunities that resonate with reporters and audiences alike. This approach ensures your messaging aligns with current events and broader industry trends. Example: For one of our clients, we turned an anniversary milestone into a broader narrative about collaboration and innovation, which resulted in increased engagement across multiple channels.
  2. Use Story Packages Transform your content into compelling story packages. Think about what info a reporter needs for a story and then provide all those elements: The spokespeople and their viewpoints, the images and artwork, including video. Industry news article that relates to your subject. Research and data that support your claim. Package up all your content and provide it to reporters.
  3. Embrace Thematic Campaigns Thematic campaigns allow you to align your messaging under a cohesive idea, creating a long-term narrative that reinforces your thought leadership. For one of our clients, the umbrella theme united all their blog posts, videos, white papers, and an annual Summit, showcasing how technology can address global challenges.
  4. Leverage Contributed Content to Build Thought Leadership Contributed articles, guest opinion pieces, and feature stories are powerful tools for shaping narratives and establishing credibility. These pieces also improve SEO by building domain authority and increasing backlink opportunities. Example: For a remote access software client, we developed a series of contributed articles, positioning their CEO as a thought leader on work-from-home trends. The result? Increased visibility, media placements, and lead generation.
  5. Use AI to Elevate Your PR Efforts Artificial intelligence is transforming PR by providing data-driven insights. Tools like Meltwater and SparkToro can help you identify emerging trends, measure sentiment, and refine your messaging. AI also streamlines content creation, enabling you to generate drafts, headlines, and even pitches more efficiently.

Closing Thoughts
PR’s full potential lies in its ability to influence opinions, shape narratives, and build trust across all communication channels. Whether through contributed content, thematic campaigns, or AI-powered strategies, the opportunities to expand PR’s role are endless.

What’s your experience with PR? Are you using it to its full potential? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
