The Internet of Things, or IoT, has been generating a lot of buzz lately. Everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. And now, Gartner has announced their 2013 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies report that includes the Internet of Things. http://gtnr.it/14WgdWY. Gartner has made the theme of this year’s Hype Cycle “the evolving relationship between humans and machines.”
Gartner’s Hype Cycle talks gives “an assessment of the maturity, business benefit and future direction” of many new emerging technologies. The Hype Cycle also talks about technologies that are overhyped such as “big data” and “gamification.”
Jackie Fenn, VP and Garner fellow, said there are three main trends. These trends are:
- augmenting humans with technology
- machines replacing humans
- humans and machines working alongside each other
Cisco talks about the Internet of Everything and the term “machine to machine” (M2M) has been around for several years. In talking to an editor recently, he remarked that embedded computing is really the same thing as the Internet of Things.
